Auto Insurance Review: Look Beyond the Monthly Premium

Learn how to compare auto policies using liability limits, vehicle coverage, deductibles, and driver details so a lower premium does not hide important differences.

A lower auto insurance premium can be appealing, but the useful question is what coverage you would have after a loss. Compare the details of a policy, not just the price on a quote.

Start with liability limits

Liability coverage generally addresses injuries or property damage you cause to others in a covered accident, up to the policy's limits. State minimum requirements are not the same as a personal recommendation. Ask what each limit means, whether it fits the risks you want to manage, and how the cost changes if you choose a different limit.

Separate protection for others from protection for your car

Collision coverage generally concerns damage to your vehicle from a crash. Comprehensive coverage generally concerns certain other covered events, such as theft or a falling object. These are different from liability coverage. If you finance or lease a vehicle, ask about any coverage requirements in your agreement; do not assume the state minimum protects the car itself.

Understand your deductible

Check whether your collision and comprehensive coverages have different deductibles. A higher deductible may reduce a premium, but it can also mean a larger amount you pay after a covered loss. Choose an amount you could realistically handle, not just the one that produces the lowest quote.

Ask about coverage involving another driver

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, medical payments or personal injury protection, and rental reimbursement may be available or handled differently depending on the state and policy. Ask what you have, what it is designed to address, and what limits or conditions apply. Do not assume that a rental car is automatically provided during every claim.

Update the everyday details

A new driver in the household, another vehicle, a change in commute, or using a car for work can change the insurance conversation. Tell your agent about those changes and ask whether your current policy still matches how each vehicle is used. If you are comparing quotes, use the same limits, deductibles, drivers, and vehicles so the prices are meaningful.

Bring to your review: your declarations page, current vehicle and driver information, and a list of questions about limits, deductibles, and optional coverages. Fulton Insurance Agency can help explain the differences in plain language.
